FAKING IT!
300 Years of Banknote Forgery
8th July-31st August 2008

This summer's exhibition at the Museum on the Mound is devoted to the intriguing subject of banknote forgery.

The first European banknotes were issued in Scotland in 1696 - and the first fakes appeared shortly after...

Drawing on material from the HBOS collections, 'Faking It!' looks at forgers and forgeries over three centuries. The displays also include items generously loaned by the Natural History Museum and the National Archives of Scotland.

Discover who created the first fakes. What became of the artist with a talent for (literally!) making money?  Find out how cattle were involved in a sophisticated 19th century scam...

You can also play detective! Help the Bank catch an 18thcentury forger, using the 'identikit' interactive. And see if you can spot a forgery from the real thing . . .
